Bluesonde Secures $1.74M to Scale Real-Time Water Monitoring

September 29, 2026

Bluesonde Technologies has secured $1.74 million in new funding to scale its real-time water monitoring platform, including a $1.3 million pre-seed financing, a $250,000 loan from Maine Technology Institute, and a $190,000 NOAA Small Business Innovation Research Phase I award.

More than 40 Bluesonde monitoring systems have been deployed in 2026 across Maine and several other states. Most current deployments support shellfish aquaculture and related research, while a growing number are being used for environmental monitoring, water utilities, beach safety, and other applications.

“Water should be as connected to data as the rest of our economy. Our goal is to make continuous monitoring simple and affordable enough to deploy at a much larger scale, creating a high-resolution, real-time picture of how our waters are changing and giving the people who depend on them better information to make decisions.”

Andrew Thompson, CEO and Co-Founder, Bluesonde

The $1.3 million pre-seed financing was led by Corsair Venture Partners, with participation from Anthrofix and other investors. Bluesonde will use the funding to expand production and deployments, advance its monitoring technology, and build the software and data infrastructure needed to support larger, more connected water monitoring networks.

“We’ve watched Bluesonde grow from a highly technical team with an early idea into a company with a commercial product, paying customers, and real-world deployments. The opportunity to make continuous water monitoring more accessible, while building the data infrastructure around a growing network of systems, is what made us excited to support the company at this stage.”

Making continuous water monitoring practical

Water conditions can change rapidly, but traditional monitoring often relies on periodic manual sampling that provides only a snapshot of conditions. Continuous monitoring can provide a more complete picture, but conventional systems can be expensive, difficult to deploy, and maintenance-intensive.

Bluesonde’s compact monitoring systems are designed to be deployed quickly, operate with minimal maintenance, and continuously transmit water-quality data to the cloud. Customers can monitor conditions in real time through a web-based platform while building a historical record that can reveal changes that periodic sampling may miss.

A key part of the platform is Bluesonde’s patent-pending ultraviolet (UV) antifouling technology. Biofouling can degrade sensor performance and create a significant maintenance burden for equipment deployed in the water. Bluesonde’s low-power UV system is designed to extend deployment periods and reduce the need for frequent servicing, helping make continuous monitoring practical across larger numbers of distributed systems.

“We’ve deployed Bluesonde systems alongside traditional monitoring equipment and have been impressed by their ability to collect high-quality data over extended deployments with far fewer site visits. Making continuous monitoring easier to deploy and maintain significantly expands where and how we can observe our coastal waters.”

From Maine to a growing national footprint

Bluesonde’s early growth has been closely tied to Maine’s marine science, aquaculture, and technology ecosystem. The company is based at Northeastern University’s Roux Institute in Portland, where it has developed and manufactured its systems as part of the ClimateTech Incubator.

Maine Technology Institute has supported the company’s development and commercialization efforts, and Bluesonde has worked with organizations including the University of Maine’s Darling Marine Center, Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, and other research, aquaculture, and environmental partners. These relationships have helped Bluesonde move from early prototypes to commercial deployments while refining its hardware, software, and field operations.

The $250,000 Maine Technology Institute loan will support manufacturing scale-up and commercialization, while the $190,000 NOAA Small Business Innovation Research Phase I award will support further development and testing of Bluesonde’s UV antifouling technology.

The new financing and research support will allow Bluesonde to grow its team and customer base, advance its monitoring technology to meet growing demand in new applications, and continue building the software and data infrastructure needed to turn individual monitoring locations into a broader source of water intelligence.

About Bluesonde

Bluesonde Technologies develops scalable, real-time water monitoring systems for oceans, freshwater systems, and other waterways. Its compact, low-maintenance platforms continuously collect water-quality data and stream it to a cloud-based platform, helping researchers, industries, utilities, and communities better understand and manage the waters they depend on.

By making continuous monitoring easier to deploy at scale, Bluesonde is building the foundation for high-resolution, real-time data across more of the world’s waterways. Bluesonde is based at the Roux Institute in Portland, Maine.
